dealing with the global crisis

“If civilization is to survive, we must cultivate the science of human relationships - the ability of all peoples, of all kinds, to live together, in the same world at peace.” - Franklin D. Roosevelt

An international new deal to save our economy

I'm writing this from the opening session of the UN Climate Change Negotiations in Poznan, Poland. I've been here for a few days now, as part of the UK Youth Delegation. I'm in a huge conference hall listening to the UN and national politicians talk about how all 10,000 people ...

The Economist tackles the green new deal

The Economist magazine recently wrote an article criticising plans for a Green New Deal. It makes some good points, but in general I found its treatment of the subject quite superficial, so I wanted to write something here in response. Firstly, it claims that subsidising renewable energy would be a bad ...

Some substance to US green jobs policy

I'm wary of getting too excited about the election of Barack Obama, but I do think he's got to be slightly better than George "I'm thick as two short planks" Bush. As you may have guessed, I'm particularly interested in what Obama is going to do about two things: (i) the ...

Responding to Ursula’s comments

As you'll see below, Ursula left a substantial comment and I thought I'd respond to it in a new post rather than an equally long comment... The first thing Ursula asked was whether or not I was happy that Gordon Brown has passed the huge bailout package. Would it have been ...

When banks fail…

The Internet can enable many things, and one of the most interesting ones is allowing people to trade with each other and not via shops and other intermediaries. The obvious example is here is Ebay, where people sell things to each other at a frenetic pace. One of the more interesting ...

Thoughts on cold rationality

Despite cringing quite a lot when watching this (and realising that I need to keep my head a lot more still!), I decided for the sake of time-saving that I would record a video rather than write a post today. Hopefully the sound quality is good enough... Thoughts on cold rationality ...

Notes from a night in the pub

On Friday night I found myself in my local Hackney pub, and it was just my luck that I ended up in a debate with two incredibly clever Italian academics - one of whom was a committed communist (or to be more exact, a Bolshevist). By the end of the ...

Changing the debate

As I write this a second rescue package is about to be voted on by Congress. This time it looks like there is more chance that it will get passed. The main changes are that it has raised the amount that normal citizens have guaranteed if their savings are affected by ...

Trying to bail out the existing system

The American Congress has just rejected a $700bn rescue package formulated by George Bush and his Treasury Secretary, Henry Paulson. Lines between Republicans and Democrats have been blurred completely during this time of crisis: Bush (a Republican) had the support of most Democrats in the House of Representatives (the lower house ...

Welcome

A few years ago I read an article that compared pub conversations in 2005 with documented pub conversations that took place in 1955. Unfortunately I cannot find the article in question, but its conclusions (as far as I can recollect them) were not particularly surprising. In 1955 subject matter focused on ...

About

We need a truly international response to the current global financial, energy and environmental crises. We're trying to work out what that response should be, and how it is best co-ordinated.

This site is inspired by the ideas for a Green New Deal. It seeks to discuss relevant ideas and constructively criticise policy suggestions, using the Internet to help us confront the challenges that face us.

This blog is no longer active

I decided that I wanted to write about more than just 'dealing with the global crisis' so I've started more actively blogging at http://jamieandrews.name/blog. Lots of the issues I'll be tackling overlap with the stuff I was writing about here, and you can browse all the old posts there as ...

Collapsonomics

There's an interesting set of ideas emerging in response to the economic crisis and the inadequate response that we're seeing to it. The only coherent and easily-referencable nascent 'movement' that I've been able to identify from amongst the numerous voices clamouring for attention, is called 'Collapsonomics'. The idea is defined as ...

The credit crisis re-explained

Soon I'm going to write something about what the G20 have come up with, but in the meantime, I wanted to share this video: The Crisis of Credit Visualized from Jonathan Jarvis on Vimeo. It's pretty similar in terms of clarifying the situation as the presentation I linked to in my first ...

My G20 protest

When I started this blog back in September, I wanted to promote the idea of embarking on a 'green new deal' to deal with the economic situation that has continued to unfold since then. Tomorrow the G20 meet to discuss things (as they should), but with no imagination whatsoever having ...

A good explanation of where we are

I've been running around very busily recently with lots of other things, and so have unfortunately neglected to post here for some time. I have had some ideas about where the kinds of things I've been discussing here may go next though, and more about that soon. In the meantime, I ...
